Detroit and the Joe Louis Arena were host to Reagan and the Republican National Convention in 1980. During his stay in Detroit, Reagan stayed in the Detroit Renaissance Center which at the time had the tallest hotel. This attracted tourist and gathered both media and public attention. Alot of people saw this as the rebirth of Detroit and both the city and mayor Young used this momentum to give way to other projects.
