Following the opening of the Joe Louis Arena and the republican national convention, the city introduced the Detroit/Hamtramk Assembly in 1981. This plant received a lot attention and a great number of people protested its development because it was built on land that house a polish community. Through eminent Domain they were able to acquire the land, and even though people were left without a home Mayor Young took sides with General Motors in creation of the plant for economic purposes, seeking new jobs and forms of investment.Although many residents felt like Detroit had betrayed its loyal residents they did not complain or join the protestors because they knew that the assembly plant would bring in new jobs.
